Creative Interior Design & Branding W/ Dionne Ilisa

Dionne Ilisa is a Designer and Entrepreneur who specializes in Interiors and Branding Strategy. She studied Interior Design at PRATT Institute in New York and is a Graphic Designer and Artist. She is the Founder & Creative Director of Illisa Creative.

In this conversation, we are talking about interior design, branding and creating beautiful spaces. Dionne, shares about her career path and how she discovered/entered this creative path. Very often, our internal desires and calling give us signs along the way, and if answered it will show us the path we should take. This was certainly the case with Dionne.

We talk about her time at PRATT, that of being a minority and that  Caribbean girl. Which was challenging, required perseverance and passion for her to complete her studies.

Dionne, speaks about trying to find work as an Interior Designer in her home Country and generally the challenges professionals in  specializations in Creative fields (like architecture, interior design etc.) often have when they return home. Sometimes, it requires that they work in areas outside of their training, or open their own business to make a living and follow their passions.

Dionne talks about elements of a good design for your logo. Ideally it should be simple, represent your brand, be timeless and be able to scale. If it can't fit on a pencil and you cannot see all the elements of it, that is not a best designed logo.

We discuss designing and curating spaces. That is functionality vs. aesthetics and the balance of both. Dionne talks about the importance of interior design; it is not just about looking nice and pretty.

Interior Designers, create spaces for people to feel comfortable and be productive in whatever they are doing in the space. This will of course depend on many factors. Dionne gives some design principles, tips and much more.
